Juliette Music & Arts Academy is honoured to welcome Dr Bernard Tan for a one-day Operatic Conducting Masterclass, designed for conductors seeking deeper insight into working with singers and operatic repertoire.
This intensive masterclass focuses on recitativo accompagnato, aria, and full operatic scene work, with particular emphasis on following the voice, tempo flexibility, and text-driven conducting—essential skills for effective operatic leadership.
Participants will work closely with a vocal soloist and piano, gaining hands-on experience in navigating transitions, phrasing, and dramatic continuity commonly found in opera.

About Dr Bernard Tan
Malaysian pianist, conductor and music educator Dr. Bernard Tan holds a Doctor of Musical Arts (DMA) in Collaborative Piano from the University of Michigan, USA, where he studied under the esteemed Martin Katz—becoming the only Malaysian to complete this prestigious program. He also earned his Master of Music with Distinction from the Royal Birmingham Conservatoire in the United Kingdom. A versatile and award-winning pianist, Bernard has received numerous accolades, including the John Ireland Prize, Hester Dickson Prize, and the Birmingham Town Hall Symphony Hall Prize.
As an opera repetiteur and coach, Bernard has collaborated with conductors such as Stefano Vignati, Judith Yan, Stephanie Rhodes, and Peter Ford in opera productions in England, United States, Canada, Italy and Malaysia. Notable opera companies include Opera on the Avalon (Canada), Opera Emporio (England), Music Academy of the West (USA), International Lyric Academy (Italy), and Kuala Lumpur City Opera (KLCO). Bernard studied opera conducting with maestro Oriol Sans at the University of Michigan, further honing his music directing skills in operas. He was awarded the Best Musical Direction Award at the 20th BOH Cameronian Arts Awards (BCAA), for his work as a conductor in the KLCO production of Puccini’s La Bohèmein 2024. In 2025, he also conducted the KLCO production of Mozart’s Don Giovanni.
As a passionate music educator, Bernard was invited to give masterclasses in various tertiary institutions, including UCSI University, Sunway University, Universiti Malaya, Universiti Putra Malaysia and Jiaying University in China. He also teaches conducting classes at Universiti Teknologi MARA and Universiti Putra Malaysia. Currently, he serves as a senior lecturer at the Music Department at Universiti Putra Malaysia (UPM), while actively involved in masterclasses, performances, workshops, and piano studio teaching.
